Cleaning up and moving on

So, I've been attempting to get organized lately. As usual, I've started with my hoards...and piles of stuff! I have soooo much stuff, it's getting out of control.

I have clothing in mutliple sizes. While it came in handy when I recently lost a lot of weight, it is a pain in the butt to deal with on a daily basis. My garage and two spare rooms have become a waistland of clothing.

I have this sort of ...addiction to buying! I love shopping! I love finding a great deal, don't you?
But, when is it too much?

I'm setting some goals here and now!

Goals

  • De-clutter- Find a way to narrow down to a usable amount of clothing, jewelry and stuff!
  • Use it or lose it- If I haven't used it in a year, toss it!
  • Operation Donation- Get things ready to donate, but don't drop them all at one spot. Spread the love.
  • Give away piles- Give items to friends and family that would use them.
  • Swap- Swap items with a girlfriend or fellow blogger that is my size or has a similar style.
  • Have a yardsale...or two
  • List some of the items for sale
  • Don't NEED it- don't buy it?- This is a tough one for me- but I plan to work toward meeting this goal.

It's a little late for Spring cleaning but it's definitely time to get organized. Are you struggling with the same thing as me? Or, do you have tips to share and help this process go smoothly? Share them below in the comments section.

  1. When you get done, can you come help me get organized? LOL! Great ideas though - you've got me motivated now!

  2. I love your ideas! I need to do some of the same stuff, though I did just do a big closet cleanout and donate a bunch of stuff after my swap (at which I found nothing, which was actually kind of good!). I too love shopping, and have been trying not to buy anything new, especially that I don't need. One of my New Year's Resolutions was to buy less new and more thrifted, so I've been trying to do that when I can. But really, I just need to stop shopping and START shopping my closet!! I'm going to sit down this long weekend and set some goals for myself... I may even take some of yours. But I'll definitely share them when I figure out what they are!

  3. Just a little tip... hang all of your clothes with hangers going the same way in closets. When you wear an item and return it to the closet, turn the hanger the other way. This will be a a great visual down the road for what you have and have not worn in a while. It's quite telling! :)

  4. I have a ton of craft supplies I need to apply this too! I so need to just throw most of them out and apply the "don't need it don't buy it" rule.

  5. We have a garage sale every Spring and Fall. It always amazes me how much stuff we have for the sale and then, that someone actually wants to buy it! Win-win for everyone!

  6. I'm having a yard sale this weekend ;) I seem to reach a "clutter saturation point" and decide everything must go!!

  7. Sounds simple, but I can never pull myself together. Oh, well - one day...

  8. I'm a huge fan of the use it or lose it mantra! When I help others update their closets we always go through what they have first and it shocks me how many women keep items that they have not worn in years. The reasons are endless but what a lot of extra bulk to hang on to for no real reason. 12 months and it goes. - Katy

  12. In Jan. 2011, I ran a yearlong. Decluttering Challenge on my blog where people get rid of at least one item everyday for 365 days. It was a huge hit and lots of people participated. Decluttering is liberating!

  13. I've been trying to organize my room all week! It's a process - I find it often looks a LOT more cluttered before it all falls together! I heard one good tip for sorting through clothes - if you haven't worn it in the last year, ditch it! :)
